My name is Kate Curry-Da-Souza.
I am a mother, a wife, and a community advocate.
Please read below to learn more about who I am, my values and what I am about.
I was born in Oberlin and raised in rural southern Lorain County, and came to Columbus in 2001.
I worked my way through college and graduated in 2010 from The Ohio State University with a Bachelors of Arts.
I have babysat, catered, cashiered, bartended, worked three part time jobs and more than 100 hours a week to put food on the table and take care of my family. I know what it means to struggle to make ends meet: when you have to walk home with groceries because even the bus is too expensive, or juggle which bills can be a few days late when there is more month than money.
I am not afraid of hard work. I believe in boots on the ground work, and to lead through actions not just words.
I believe in leadership of our communities and our city being for and by the people. I will continue to work hard to represent our communal interests as your District 7 City Councilmember.
I have a 22 year old son, A, who graduated from college this year. He loves coffee, listening to music, and traveling. As an Eagle Scout, he also admittedly loves ultralight camping.
I also have an 11 year old son, N, who is a sixth grader in Columbus City Schools. He loves gardening, cooking, and has recently achieved his first rank in Scouts.
Both my sons have attended public schools. This education has been made more meaningful through their interactions they have had in our community: gardening classes with the Bronzeville Growers, Boy Scouts with Troop 262 at St. Paul AME, an internship at City Hall, shadowing neighbors who work in public radio. Our community has taken the time to teach my kids about about the history of our neighborhood, sundown towns, redlining, how to properly trim hedges and the meaning of getting up before the school bus comes to shovel the sidewalk of an elderly neighbor. A & N have had so many learning opportunities provided to them through our community and have been raised to value this education.
My husband, Ewart, is a CCAD grad. He is a comic book illustrator. He works every day to be the best father to our boys, a loving, supportive partner who believes in social justice starting in our home and spreading to our community. He is our anchor. Together we have built stability for ourselves and our family to grow and improve.
